Introduction: This study examines the structural and operational challenges that hinder the international positioning of open access academic journals published by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), particularly in the fields of arts, humanities, social sciences, and economics. Building on recent performance in Scimago, the study argues that editorial management —including technical, academic, and communication dimensions— plays a decisive role in the professionalization and global competitiveness of journals. Methodology: A qualitative-analytical design was applied through the triangulation of: a) editorial performance and digital visibility indicators; b) institutional and technical regulations governing journal management (with emphasis on OJS workflows, metadata curation, editorial committees, and turnaround times); and c) comparative analysis of UNAM journals that recently advanced to Q1 and Q2. This approach enabled the identification of management gaps, impact-related factors, and shared patterns among higher-ranked journals. Results: Findings indicate that most journals display weaknesses in editorial professionalization, metadata standardization, publication regularity, academic governance, and structured communication strategies. Successful practices from consolidated Q1-Q2 journals include strengthened technical management within OJS, active and qualified editorial committees, improved response times, internationalized authorship, and systematic scientific dissemination strategies. Conclusions: The institutionalization of an integrated management model —technical, academic, and communicational— is essential to enhance the global visibility and indexation performance of UNAM journals. The study offers a strategic and replicable framework aimed at editorial professionalization and increased international impact.
