Territorial Education and Social Transformation: A Critical Reflection from the Orlando Fals Borda Chair.

This article develops a critical reflection on the role of higher education in societal development, based on the experience of the Orlando Fals Borda Open Chair, a strategy promoted by the Regional Intersystem Observatory (OIR) of the National Open and Distance University (UNAD) and presented at FILBAC 2026. From a qualitative and reflective approach, the analysis examines the historical tensions and gaps between academic knowledge and ancestral knowledge, as well as the potential of participatory action research as a pathway for their articulation. Drawing on experiences developed in the Caribbean region, this study shows how research processes, carried out in dialogue with communities, contribute to the economic, productive, social, educational, technological, and cultural development of territories. Furthermore, the analysis recognizes communities as epistemic subjects and key agents of transformation within knowledge dialogue settings that position the Chair as a social laboratory. It concludes that higher education becomes truly transformative when it co-constructs knowledge with communities, fostering inclusive and sustainable territorial development dynamics.
