Metalinguistic awareness refers to the ability to reflect on language and its structures, as well as to analyze and
manipulate linguistic aspects consciously. In the context of bilingualism, this awareness acquires a particular dimension due to the interaction between two or more
linguistic systems in the speaker’s mind. Therefore, in this reflective article, we analyze the theoretical postulates
that connect and frame metalinguistic awareness as a fundamental capacity in the development of the bilingual
process, defining its components and benefits in terms of enhancing higher mental abilities or executive functions.
Additionally, bilingualism is defined from a sociocultural perspective, with language seen as a product of culture
and society. Finally, four key doctrines are outlined, derived from the relationship between metalinguistic
awareness and bilingualism, and summarized in terms of the interconnection between language, mind, and culture.
