Transformation in the social and cultural conditions of professionals in Colombia: contributions from education
This text presents the main results of a research work, limited to the years 1980 – 2019, that enquired into how received education, up to higher education, contributes to the transformation of social and cultural conditions, such as: roles and social status, economic situation, social strata, access to education, among others. The research design of this work corresponds to the socio-critical paradigm, hermeneutical methodology, and techniques such as: survey, structured interview, and documentary research. The main findings indicate that education promotes vertical mobility, employability, and better social relationship in those who obtain a professional degree; in the same sense, it was found that approaching people with a good cultural level became a path, which incorporates different habitus. Nevertheless, some challenges were identified, in which some efforts could be concentrated from Public Policies and their implementation instruments in the following decades. Those of higher importance are quality education to gender equity, better articulation between education and working sectors, and equity in the access and continuity in both education and work. The conclusions of this research suggest that the previous conditions improve because of education, but in a conditioned form; although education has been declared as a central element in policies and practices oriented to the achievement of development and social mobility, there was no evidence of that correspondence in the National Budget allocation, nor in the working opportunities for graduates from all higher education modalities, fields of knowledge, or social classes. Lastly, some challenges are situated in the generation of better conditions from education.
