The objective of this article is to describe the actions and positioning of students in the configuration of a learning environment that enhances the integrality of a constructive and reflective citizen in the formation of a critical citizenship from school mathematics. The research was oriented by means of a qualitative approach with descriptive and comprehensive cuts, having as target population ninth grade students of a Secondary Basic Education Institution in the Colombian context. The results critically describe the way in which students configure a learning environment from their knowledge and experiences. The research concludes that the configuration of the learning environment by students is the result of new visions of what school mathematics can be, allowing to understand that mathematics has the purpose of organizing part of the reality of citizens.
