Contributions of the environmental knowledge of sheep herders to science teaching in schools in Portugal: results of a Pilot Research
This paper presents the results of a pilot study that investigated how Portuguese rural environmental knowledge, specifically sheep herders’ knowledge, can enrich science teaching in schools. The data obtained through a semi-structured interview with a sheep herder and participant observation of her activities with notes in a field diary were subjected to Thematic Analysis. The results showed that sheep herders have an interesting set of knowledge and practices related to the biology and ecology of these animals. This knowledge can be integrated into intercultural science teaching dialogue to promote inclusive, contextualised and meaningful science education.
