Analysis of the functionality of the organizational structures of companies in the construction sector in Cartagena, Colombia
The internal organization of a construction company plays an essential role in its operation, effectiveness and its ability to adjust to a constantly changing business environment. At a global level, the reported advances in labor productivity in the sector correspond to an annual average of 1% and less than 2.8%. However, there is a lack of in-depth understanding regarding the specific organizational structures these companies employ and how these structures affect
their performance positively or negatively. Therefore, the selection of an organizational structure model that is in accordance with the needs of the company and its clients is vital for its development and growth. In this study, the functional analysis of the types of organizational structures applied in 6 construction companies in Cartagena-Bolívar was carried out. The guidelines for the selection of the organizational structure in terms of business efficiency and profitability and the type of structure used were identified. In addition, a comparative analysis was carried out on the efficiency of construction companies with an organizational structure and without an organizational structure. Finally, recommendations were made in the selection and application of the organizational structure and likewise in the identification of opportunities for improvement in organizational practices for better performance in project management in the development of construction projects.
