Pulse oximeter is a device that uses the principles of spectrophotometry and photoplethysmography for the measurement of arterial oxygen saturation, as well as the cardiac and respiratory cycle, which is useful for monitoring patients with respiratory compromise. In this work, a bibliographic review of the physical principles of the pulse oximeter and its most recent advances in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma and COVID-19 are carried out. Pulse oximetry was found to be a reliable and effective tool in the diagnosis and prevention of complications in patients with these respiratory diseases.
