Mesenchymal stem cells are pluripotent and adult with fibroblastoid morphology and plasticity towards different cell lineages such as chondrocytes, osteocytes, and adipocytes among others. These cells can be isolated mainly from bone marrow, umbilical cord blood, and adipose tissue where it has been possible to establish cultures that have allowed the study of their functional and phenotypic properties.

Although the information that has been collected thus far does not offer a complete knowledge, it is hoped that with future research several biological aspects can be cleared up to implement its use in regenerative medicine. This revision presents a general vision of mesenchymal stem cells, morphology and immunophenotype, ontogeny, sources, and clinical applications.
