Introduction. Water in dental units must comply with national and international regulations regarding optimal microbiological quality to be used for oral health purposes.

Objectives. Evaluate the microbiological quality of water in dental clinics.

Methods. Samples were collected from taps in the sterilization area and triple syringes from the dental workstations, applying the simple random method, taking into consideration international and national standards. Once collected, they were treated and evaluated by the standard membrane filtration method using Chromocult Agar medium. The average and % CFU for E. coli and total coliforms in the dental units of the clinic were calculated and compared with the regulations. current.

Results. The average Colony Forming Units (CFU) per 100 ml for E. coli and total coliforms was 2 CFU on the first floor. On the second floor, the average for E. coli was 5,727 CFU and for total coliforms it was 2,182 CFU. A total absence of 36% E. coli and 14% total coliforms was observed on the first floor and 36% E. coli and 11% total coliforms on the second floor.

Conclusions. The study of water quality in dental units complies with international and national standards. The implementation of a HACCP program and the installation of reverse osmosis systems was proposed to ensure high standards in oral health.
