Effort Reward and Burnout Syndrome in the Health Sector, an Integrative Review, 2018 to 2024
Introduction. Several studies recognize that the effort-reward imbalance has a significant impact on the job performance of healthcare personnel. Objective. To conduct an integrative review to describe the relationship between effort-reward and burnout syndrome in the healthcare sector between 2018 and 2024. Method. A search for information was conducted in the BioMed Central, Emerald Insight, Epistemonikos, Medline, ProQuest, Pubmed, Redalyc, SciELO, Science Direct, Scopus, and Springer Link databases. Twenty-two articles were selected, most of which (90.9%) used quantitative, descriptive methodology with correlational analysis. The most studied professions were doctors (30.4%), followed by nurses (21.7%). Conclusion. Younger men are more likely to develop professional burnout. Likewise, women were at greater risk of emotional exhaustion and excessive commitment. Finally, healthcare professionals with a greater effort-reward imbalance are at greater risk of developing burnout syndrome.
