IOT Technologies applied to the cultivation of pleurotus ostreatus, a mushroom of nutritional and therapeutic relevance, in controlled environments

Objective. To evaluate the impact of an automated environmental monitoring and control system, based on IoT technologies, on the productivity of the edible mushroom Pleurotus ostreatus, which is nutritionally and therapeutically important, cultivated in Obonuco (Nariño, Colombia), using local agricultural waste such as pea husks, corn stover, kikuyo grass, sawdust, wheat bran, and calcium carbonate. Method.  It consisted of the development of four stages with different levels of automation for temperature and relative humidity control, through the integration of DHT11 sensors, Arduino controllers, an online database, solenoid valves, smart outlets, and mobile devices. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's multiple comparison tests (p < 0.001) were applied to determine the effect of substrate type and automation level on incubation days and biological efficiency. Results. The increase in the level of automation led to a decrease in incubation days from 29 to 24 days, while biological efficiency increased from 29.7% to 53.6%. Treatment T5, consisting of a balanced mixture of waste with 9% seed, was the most efficient under conditions of total automation. Conclusion. Automating cultivation using IoT technologies significantly improves the productivity of Pleurotus ostreatus, optimizes environmental conditions, and represents a scalable solution for small producers, contributing to sustainability, food security, and technological innovation in the agri-food sector.
