The internationalization of higher education today represents new forms of cooperation and institutional articulation. Various international agencies have established an agenda for change that guides universities toward a model responding primarily to the demands of globalization, based on the circulation of resources, capital, and knowledge within market dynamics. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to reflect on the still emerging literature related to the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) into the internationalization processes of higher education. Increasingly, universities around the world are being compelled to respond to macro trends, such as the development of AI, which are transforming society and reshaping the knowledge economy. This essay was developed through a narrative review and documentary analysis of specialized literature on internationalization and artificial intelligence in higher education, with an emphasis on experiences and trends observed in Latin America, particularly in Mexico. It concludes that artificial intelligence constitutes an emerging catalyst for university internationalization, although its implementation poses challenges related to equity, data governance, and digital ethics.
