This paper presents a strategy that is implemented as a tool to strengthen the reading and writing of 5th-grade students in rural and urban areas of the municipality of Pasto.  As an improvement option, an activity based on the drafting and reading of letters is developed, complemented by didactics such as the application of spelling rules, role-playing, literary genres, and some audiovisual supports.  A qualitative approach is adopted, using observation and interviews as means of data collection and analysis of the impact of the strategy.  The 56 boys and girls from the three participating institutions, two rural and one urban, exchange letters integrating reading and writing into the same process that strengthens their reading and writing skills.  Clear improvements are evident in the communication of experiences and knowledge, focused on the proposed activities, in cultural exchange; both oral and written communication, which is an essential resource for establishing social skills and, in this case, also improving reading and writing skills.  In conclusion, the methodology applied and the approach of the letter as a pedagogical tool show improvements in reading and writing processes, generating visible advances in the textual comprehension and production of boys and girls.
