The COVID-19 pandemic in Bogotá, Colombia

This study examines the impact of COVID-19 in Bogotá, Colombia, on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a specific focus on housing and public services. The pandemic led to a significant economic downturn, affecting progress in SDGs related to poverty eradication and decent work. Bogotá experienced a decrease in GDP and an increase in unemployment due to business closures. Measures were implemented to support economic recovery and protect affected businesses and workers. The crisis also had adverse effects on housing and access to basic public services in Bogotá. Disruptions in the provision of healthcare services and challenges in accessing equitable education were observed. The city saw an increase in informal settlements and difficulties in accessing basic hygiene conditions for some residents. In response, the government implemented partial development plans to improve urban planning and provide adequate housing to vulnerable households. Additionally, subsidy programs were established to mitigate poverty and promote housing sustainability. Despite these challenges, Bogotá demonstrated commitment to building an inclusive and sustainable future, aligning efforts with SDGs. The study emphasizes the need to address disparities and enhance social protection policies to ensure an equitable and sustainable recovery, especially in the areas of housing and public services. By aligning actions with the SDGs, the city can work towards a resilient future that prioritizes the well-being and living conditions of its residents.
