Health psychology and his relationship to public policies
Health psychology is a part of psychology that has focused on generating contributions to the improvement of people’s health and quality of life, through the prevention and treatment of diseases, as well as the promotion of healthy lifestyles and the improvement of the health system in which all citizens are immersed. Some of the most widely used explanatory and intervention models are the Health Belief Model and the Ecological Model, which over the years have provided the basis for the creation of plans and programmes aimed at improving people’s quality of life and health.
In recent years the role of the psychologist has been more clearly involved in the creation of public policies aimed at improving mental health and solving problems that afflict communities; prioritizing access to health services for all citizens, generating and developing health prevention and promotion programmes and focusing actions on the real needs of society.
