Measurement of the body condition of the cebu cattle
Contextualization of the Topic: Body condition is defined as the amount of fat covered by the cow, which indicates the useful energy reserves available to face the high demands imposed by milk production and the advantages of this indicator are pointed out. on live weight, thoracic perimeter and other estimators of body reserves. Research gap: In the cattle ranch of Cebu cattle in the Colombian tropics, especially in the Caribbean region, the technique of visual observation has taken hold, without knowledge of the indicators of body condition, and therefore it is necessary to promote the use of the qualification of body condition as a field tool in decision-making in cow nutritional management. Purpose of Working paper: It is to socialize the knowledge that the research seedbed has been carrying out according to field trips, alluding to the type of didactic strategies that imply the application of concepts, theories and postulates for the construction of new knowledge. Methodology followed in the study: A methodology for zebu cattle with 5 scoring categories is provided, applying the guide for the evaluation of the body condition of cows in dual-purpose systems, with the following scale: 1 very poor, 2 poor, 3 regular , 4 good, 5 very good and 6 obese. Results Obtained We show that the vast majority of cows have a body condition between 3 and 4, which can be considered fair to good, reflecting that they have little milk production, have a large number of open days and a low body condition at end of lactation. Conclusions:The close relationship between body condition values with the nutritional level, the incorporation into production, body condition values of 2.5 to 3.5 were evidenced if you want to achieve adequate productive and reproductive levels.
