Perceptions towards insects and arthropods are formed in childhood, generally developing negative concepts. This can result in low environmental awareness. The present study examines the perception of insects among children aged 7 to 12 at Liceo Campestre Mundo Constructivo in Santana, Boyacá. Surveys were conducted to classify animals and create fantastic stories with insects as protagonists. It was observed that students have knowledge to classify vertebrates and invertebrates but lack solid foundations about the focal group. Animal preferences were evident according to gender, and there was a negative perception towards insects. The need for natural science education with an experimental pedagogy focused on the functionality of organisms, using insects as study models, is emphasized
