An analysis was made on the role of science and technology in relation to development issues, advocating the need for scientific and technological work to be justified in its ability to contribute to the welfare of rural communities and marginal urban areas. The need to redefine the concepts of science, technology and research in the context of community development was found as well as the urgency of great changes in the educational system, for which the approaches to education for marginalized sectors of Colombian society were referenced, approaches the Foundation for the Application and Teaching of Science (FUNDAEC) has been developing during more than 35 years of experience
