Contextualization: Biol is a liquid organic fertilizer, produced by the anaerobic fermentation of organic matter, used as a source of nutrients and microorganisms, to stimulate plant development and improve soil quality. Its use in pastures could contribute to increasing biomass production and reducing chemical fertilization and soil degradation.

Knowledge gap: Agricultural producers in the Colombian Caribbean are unaware of the use of co-products such as animal manure as an alternative to produce organic fertilizers, and the benefits of their use in pastures to improve soil nutrition and forage production.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of biol on the growth and nutritional quality of Guinea grass (Megathyrsus maximus cv. Tanzania) in the Colombian dry Caribbean.

Methodology: Five treatments were applied at the time of cutting the pasture, under a randomized block design with three replicates: control without fertilization (T1), edaphic fertilization with urea (50 kg N/ha) (T2), foliar fertilization with mineralized biol at 5% v/v (T3), foliar fertilization with mineralized biol at 10% v/v (T4) and foliar fertilization with mineralized biol at 5% v/v plus 50% fertilization with urea (25 kg N /ha) (T5). At the end of the production cycle, plant height, coverage, forage production and quality, as well as edaphic variables, were evaluated. Data were analyzed using SAS 8.3 (8.3.0.103) statistical software.

Results and conclusions: The results showed that T2, T3, T4 and T5 increased the percentage of coverage, height, yield of green forage and dry forage of the pasture compared to the control treatment (p<0.05). Plants treated with T5 showed similar results to T2 (p>0.05) in the different variables evaluated. Pasture quality in terms of soluble carbohydrates, %P, %K and %S showed differences between treatments (P<0.05). The use of biol as organic fertilizer could be an alternative that allows improving the growth of Megathyrsus maximus cv. Tanzania. and reduce chemical fertilization, without significantly affecting forage production and its nutritional quality.
