Characterization of Hailstorms over the city of Bogotá, Colombia
A hailstorm is an event in which ice particles of varying sizes precipitate, potentially causing damage to urban infrastructure and disruptions to urban mobility, as frequently occurs in Bogotá. However, despite its relevance for risk management, there is no updated characterization of these events in the city. For this reason, this study identifies the characteristics of occurrence, climatological conditions, and spatial patterns of hailstorms in Bogotá during the period 2008 - 2024. To accomplish this, reports of hailstorms from local media and municipal agencies, as well as precipitation records available from official entities, were analyzed. Results indicate that hailstorms usually occur between 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., with March and October registering the higher frequency. In addition, Usaquén is the locality with the highest frequency of hailstorms. The impacts most commonly reported include flooding and disruptions to urban mobility. Understanding the location and magnitude of hailstorms provides key insights for optimizing drainage infrastructure planning and mitigating the impacts of these events.
