Screening for Diabetes Mellitus type 2 using the Findrisc testin a group of Teachers

Introduction. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a clinical problem which has globally reached alarming levels, mainly affecting the working-age population. Objective. Determine the risk of developing T2DM in a sample of public school teachers. Methodology.Excess weight and obesity were established from body mass index. Abdominal perimeter was evaluated and the risk of diabetes mellitus was determined through the questionnaire FINDRISC validated for Colombia. Results. 245 teachers were included, 62,8% were women. A higher proportion of men had an increased abdominal perimeter (35,9%) and
women had more obesity (21%). On the other hand, men do more physical activity than women and 23,3% of the teachers over the age of 54 had a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Conclusion. Regardless of age and gender, 35,1% of the participants
have a higher risk of developing T2DM over the next ten years.
