Adoption of the role in medication administration in caregivers of older adults
Objective. To describe the level of adoption of the role in the use of medications in elderly caregivers with chronic disease belonging to the Comuneros basic care unit, in San José de Cúcuta. Materials and methods. This was a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study developed in the second half of 2022, in which 200 family caregivers of older adults with chronic disease (CD) participated, to whom two instruments were applied: GCPC-UN-C©, characterization sheet for family caregivers of people with chronic disease and ROL-M, Adoption of the role of the family caregiver of chronic patients in the use of medications. Results. In most of the caregivers, a basic level of adoption of the role in medication management was evidenced. The dimension of tasks of execution of the role predominated the positive evaluation in the participants, but not in the dimensions of role organization, and responses to the role that showed differences in their appreciation. Conclusions. Strengthening the adoption of the role of caregivers in the specific management of medications merits evaluating the areas of opportunity in care practice where intervention can be made.
