Editorial: Expanding Scientific Horizons from Colombia to the World

Volume 23, Issue 45 of NOVA for the year 2025 marks an extraordinary milestone in the history of our scientific publication. We are proud to announce that NOVA has been officially indexed in EMBASE (Elsevier), one of the most prestigious and selective biomedical databases worldwide. This exceptional achievement places NOVA among the select group of less than 15% of scientific journals that gain access to the most demanding platforms in the international scientific arena.

A Recognition of Scientific Excellence

Inclusion in EMBASE represents a rigorous validation of the scientific, methodological, and editorial quality that has defined NOVA since its creation. EMBASE, owned by Elsevier, contains more than 28 million references from over 8,400 indexed journals since 1947. Its selection process carefully evaluates aspects such as peer review, geographic diversity of editors and authors, clarity of abstracts, and the availability of explicit ethical policies.

This milestone consolidates NOVA’s position as an international reference publication, supported by its co-publishing institutions: the Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia (UNAD) and the Universidad Colegio Mayor de Cundinamarca (UNICOLMAYOR). Indexation in EMBASE places NOVA alongside the world’s most influential biomedical journals, significantly expanding its global reach and visibility.

The inclusion in EMBASE delivers substantial benefits to both our journal and the global scientific community:

  • Greater International Visibility: Articles published in NOVA are now accessible to researchers and healthcare professionals in more than 90 countries, exponentially increasing their potential impact. EMBASE provides unmatched coverage of the medical literature, including content not available in MEDLINE, thereby ensuring wider and more diverse dissemination.

  • Access to Global Collaboration Networks: Indexation facilitates connections with researchers worldwide, encouraging international collaborations and knowledge exchange across institutions and continents.

  • Impact on Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses: EMBASE is highly valued as a source for higher levels of scientific evidence in systematic reviews and meta-analyses. NOVA articles will now be considered as primary sources in these high-impact studies, directly contributing to the advancement of evidence-based healthcare policies.

Commitment to Open Science

NOVA remains fully committed to the Open Access model, ensuring that its content is freely and universally available to the scientific community and the general public. This editorial philosophy aligns with global trends toward the democratization of scientific knowledge and the dismantling of economic barriers to accessing high-quality information.

Future Perspectives

Indexation in EMBASE marks the beginning of a new chapter for NOVA, defined by even more demanding standards of editorial quality and scientific rigor. This recognition commits us to continuously uphold and further elevate our standards, attracting contributions from leading authors who will find in NOVA an optimal platform to disseminate their findings.

The expected increase in citations and academic impact, driven by expanded international dissemination, will firmly establish NOVA as a reference journal in Latin American biomedical sciences. This growth in visibility and impact will directly benefit our authors, whose work will now reach high-visibility international arenas.

Acknowledgments

This extraordinary achievement has been made possible thanks to the tireless efforts of our editorial team, peer reviewers, authors, and the institutions that have consistently supported NOVA. The dedication and commitment to scientific excellence by all actors involved have turned this institutional goal into reality.

With this indexation, NOVA transcends borders: the science we produce in Colombia is now read across the globe. We invite the scientific community at large to celebrate this achievement and to contribute with research of the highest quality to sustain and enhance the international prestige our journal has earned.
