Peasants as International PoliticalSubjects

In recent decades, rural social movements have consolidated themselves as international actors with the capacity for political advocacy. La Vía Campesina (LVC), founded in 1993, brings together peasant, Indigenous, landless, and agricultural workers’ organizations from various continents. Since then, it has deployed multiple strategies—from mobilization to institutional representation—in response to the advance of the globalized agri-food system. This article analyzes LVC’s trajectory over its thirty years of existence, examining how it has redefined peasantry as a plural political subject capable of contesting dominant narratives and constructing alternatives. Based on the analysis of its publications, international conferences, and specialized literature, the article addresses the main socio-environmental and eco-territorial conflicts that shape its actions, as well as thematic shifts and its connections with feminist, ecological, and decolonial agendas. The objective is to understand how the expansion and transformation of its political framework enables a reconfiguration of the role of the peasantry in the global governance of food.
