India is attempting to offer a compelling alternative to China, Iran’s largest trading partner, in the Middle East. In the scenario arising from the confrontation between the Islamic Republic and Israel, Iran considered closing the strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime route for global trade, which would affect several countries, including India. The objective of this research article is to analyze the impact on India’s energy sector of a potential Iranian closure of the strait of Hormuz in the context of the Twelve-Day War. The study is conducted from a geopolitical perspective and incorporates the insights of neoclassical realism. It examines the energy risks associated with closing the strait of Hormuz. Furthermore, it addresses the characteristics of India’s economy and energy sector, as well as the trade ties between India and Iran. The study argues that Iran’s maritime projection constitutes a compensatory strategy against its geopolitical isolation, aimed at consolidating energy and logistical links with India in an environment of regional rivalry.
