In this work is presented a mathematical introduction to the photonic crystals field. It is explained in detail the Transfer Matrix technique for the calculation of guided modes in a 1D multilayer system compoused by alternating layers of two different materials. This method allows estimating the permitted and prohibited frequency ranges in which light can propagate inside a structure. The formalism presented here is widely used in the field of optical devices for data and information transmission.
