Innovation is recognized as a fundamental strategy for the sustainability of organizations. However, the innovative process involves important organizational challenges. This paper discusses the barriers to innovation faced by small and medium-sized enterprises. To this end, a review in Scopus and Web of Science databases was developed. We identified 30 articles published from 1982 to 2020.  According to the review, economic, strategic, and organizational barriers are fundamentally identified, and small and medium-sized companies perceive internal, market, collaboration, and knowledge barriers to develop innovations.
