The increase and accelerated accumulation of polymers due to poor handling of petroleum-derived plastic waste over the years have generated an unfavorable impact on the environment. However, the use of new alternative materials that are biodegradable, recyclable, sustainable, and that does not generate a negative effect is currently being promoted. The objective of this review was to analyze the current panorama and the studies related to the development of bioplastics that use natural biopolymers. The effect of polymers, possible ecological alternatives, the influence of biopolymers on the environment, and the development of bioplastics with these new materials that can be used in industry for their economic, social, and environmental advantages are analyzed.
