Hydrological dynamics of the upper Magdalena river basin. Case study: Timana river basin, Colombia
- Contextualization: Water resource management is crucial to ensure the availability and quality of water for multiple uses, including human supply, agriculture, industry, and environmental conservation. This integrated approach involves the implementation of policies, technologies and practices that promote equity in access to water, efficiency, protection of aquatic ecosystems and mitigation of risks related to scarcity, pollution and extreme weather events.
- Knowledge gap: Effective management of water resources in tropical regions has become increasingly critical due to the complexity of climatic and geographic factors. In this context, accurate prediction of peak flows is essential to mitigate flood risks and ensure water security.
- Purpose: This study evaluates the hydrological dynamics of the Timaná river basin, located in the upper Magdalena river basin.
- Methodology: The comprehensive methodology employed encompasses (1) determination of the morphometric and physiographic characteristics of the basin, (2) hydro-climatic characterization and (3) estimation of maximum flows from hydrological modeling using the HEC-HMS software for design rainfall in different return periods and extreme events.
- Results and Conclusions: The results demonstrate the usefulness of HEC-HMS in modeling peak flows in the basin, providing valuable information for decision making in water management and the design of hydraulic and drainage works. The study highlights the model's ability to accurately simulate extreme precipitation events and forecast the hydrological response, specifically in terms of peak flows. This work not only contributes to the fundamental understanding of hydrology in Colombian watersheds, but also highlights the usefulness of advanced tools such as HEC-HMS in complex geographic and climatic environments, providing a solid basis for the development of the model.
