The adaptation of Human Resource Management (HRM) in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) is essential for performance, innovation and competitiveness; therefore, it is proposed to identify the most beneficial practices for them. Methodology: through a descriptive documentary study, 50 articles were reviewed between 2018 and 2023, evaluated using the MMAT tool to ensure their quality. Results: effective HRM practices in SMEs are crucial for their success and sustainability, highlighting the attraction and retention of human talent, skills development, innovation and adaptation to change, highlighting the importance of digitizing HRM to improve processes and promote a successful work environment. Discussion & conclusion: the importance of risk management and the need for adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies are discussed, as well as the need to explore in future studies how such adoption is occurring in these industries.
