At present, due to the importance of the contribution of cooperatives to the solution of problems regarding the needs of grassroots communities, the debate on the training of leaders in competences and skills that allow the crystallization of the purposes and objects pursued by these communities and at the same time become true nuclei of fraternity and progress is gaining relevance. The purpose of this paper is to give an account, by means of a brief descriptive and analytical exercise, of the development of the concept of leader and leadership referred to the solidarity sector, emphasizing on the one hand, in what is proposed from the theory and on the other hand, in what constitutes the sum of complexities to approach the concept and its materialization in the field of experience. In this sense, the differences between management and leadership are established, from the virtues that should be possessed to become a solidary leader, highlighting commitment, attitudes and empathy, as necessary for an effective leadership. A relevant conclusión is that the gap between what a cooperative leader should be and the reality must be overcome, since in the communities leaders appear in circumstances of entrepreneurial needs, to solve problems that afflict a group and these leaders are not usually trained in the cognitive aspects of leadership.
