Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a respiratory disorder known worldwide for a persistent limitation in airflow, associated with symptoms such as dyspnea, sputum production and chronic cough, which is generated by a chronic and progressive decrease in the bronchial lumen. COPD brings with it complications such as exacerbations, worsening of the patient's prognosis, deterioration of lung function, thus leading to a reduction in the quality of life of these patients.

The purpose of this review is to identify and analyze the pharmacological treatments available in the literature, their influence on symptoms, safety, patterns of use of the most commonly prescribed medications and the improvement of lung function during the years 2016-2024. Articles in English and Spanish are included in databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Dialnet, Google Sholar and Scielo.

The evidence reviewed indicates that inhaled medications, especially in combination, are essential in the management of COPD in Colombia. Triple therapy and LABA/LAMA combinations have been shown to be the most effective options for controlling symptoms and reducing exacerbations, whereas inhaled corticosteroids should be used with caution and only in patients where their benefit is clear. These findings suggest an advance in therapeutic strategies towards personalized management of COPD, aligned with international guidelines and adapted to local needs.
