Scientific publishing is undergoing a profound transformation that goes far beyond the shift from print to digital formats, reshaping editorial workflows, validation mechanisms, and access to knowledge. This FIKA TALK examines how artificial intelligence, open access models, and low-integrity editorial practices are redefining who produces, evaluates, and controls contemporary scientific communication. The central problem is that, although this transformation expands opportunities for visibility and circulation of knowledge, it also intensifies economic inequalities, ethical tensions, and risks to academic integrity. The presentation particularly addresses the evolution of open access, peer review, AI applications in academic publishing, and regional challenges in Latin America. Its main contribution is to argue that strengthening non-commercial, collaborative, and regional models such as Diamond Open Access is a strategic path to protect equity, knowledge sovereignty, and scientific quality in the digital age.
