Microplastic and nanoplastic contamination has emerged as an important public health concern due to their widespread environmental distribution, their ability to enter the human body, and their potential effects on multiple biological systems. This study aimed to systematize a community-based educational experience designed to strengthen environmental education and health promotion through a Community Academic and Social Interaction and Participation Circle (CIPAS) conducted in Ubalá, Cundinamarca, Colombia. A qualitative study based on Participatory Action Research was carried out and complemented by a documentary review of scientific literature addressing toxicity, bioaccumulation, and systemic effects of microplastics and nanoplastics. A total of 150 participants from different age groups and community sectors attended the intervention. The findings revealed broad community awareness regarding plastic pollution and enabled the recovery of traditional knowledge related to the use of natural fibers and sustainable practices as alternatives to single-use plastics. Integrating scientific evidence with local knowledge promoted social appropriation of knowledge while strengthening environmental education and health promotion. The study concludes that Participatory Action Research represents a valuable strategy for addressing emerging contaminants from a preventive and interdisciplinary public health perspective. However, environmental monitoring and epidemiological studies are still needed to assess the effectiveness of these interventions in reducing human exposure to microplastics.
