Endocrine Disruptors as a Risk Factor for Breast and Ovarian Cancer

Exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals has emerged as a major public health concern due to their widespread presence in plastics, pesticides, cosmetics, and industrial products. This review examined the current evidence regarding their involvement in breast and ovarian carcinogenesis, with particular emphasis on disruptions of the hypothalamic–pituitary–ovarian axis, activation of hormone receptors, and associated epigenetic modifications. Findings reported in the literature indicate that compounds such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, polychlorinated biphenyls, organophosphates, bisphenol A, and phthalates may contribute to cellular proliferation, chronic inflammation, ovarian dysfunction, and tumor progression. Furthermore, the potential oncogenic risk has been associated with the bioaccumulative properties of these compounds, highlighting the increasing prevalence of cancer among the female population. Collectively, the available evidence suggests that endocrine disruptors constitute a significant risk factor for female oncological health, thereby supporting the need for strengthened regulatory, environmental, and epidemiological surveillance.
