Viral diseases transmitted by the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes pose a public health challenge, causing thousands of deaths annually in the Region of the Americas. This review examines how the interaction between temperature and altitude influences the distribution of these mosquitoes, assessing the potential risk of their establishment in high-altitude, non-endemic areas such as Bogotá. The analysis was conducted by reviewing 32 scientific articles published between 2015 and 2026 in databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar, focusing on environmental factors and altitudinal expansion in Latin America. The results identify temperature as the predominant abiotic factor in the studies, confirming that the vectors have exceeded the 1,200 m a.s.l. limit, reaching records of up to 2,302 m a.s.l. in Colombia and 2,900 m a.s.l. in Bolivia. The discussion highlights that adaptive plasticity, supported by heat shock proteins and embryonic resistance mechanisms, enables survival in environments previously considered unsuitable. Furthermore, factors such as endophilic behavior and urban heat islands favor the biological cycle of mosquitoes despite the cold. It is concluded that altitudinal expansion is an ongoing phenomenon driven by climate change, establishing a plausible risk of colonization in Bogotá that requires entomological surveillance and preventive public health strategies.
